We have a role

One hopes that better sense would prevail over the politicians and they would give a chance to new blood to come forward and play their role in turning Kashmir into a better place to live.

Kashmiri youth have been pushed to the wall due to many reasons and mainstream parties are equally responsible for it. It’s unfortunate that none of the politicians have tried to make the youth understand that they are the future of the country and can play a vital role in shaping up the destiny of their own people.

During the past few years a few politicians have been creating a notion that sports are the only way forward and youth can build their careers by becoming sportsmen.

A few people had even started telling the leaders in New Delhi that sports activities could help in solving the Kashmir problem. The Government of India displayed generosity by providing all the possible support to the state government to give a flip to the sports activities in Kashmir.

The people who projected sports as a solution to the problems of the youth forgot that sports can just keep the youth busy and nothing else. No effort was made to make youth join the mainstream politics. They tried to strengthen the dynasty politics by projecting the members of a particular family as the people who are “born to rule.” Had young people been given a chance, today they could have become the Panchayat representatives and counselors.

The young people need to be made aware about the fact that they could choose politics as their careers and become the representatives of the masses. And politics is not the fiefdom of only a few families. Anyone with the political  acumen can come forward and work for the people.

Kashmiri youth should realize that everyone cannot become doctors and engineers and they have to explore the other career options and politics could be one of the choices.

Since the day Governor’s rule has been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir mainstream politicians have been “beating their chest” over the issue of Article 35A. These politicians seem to have forgotten that they have played a pivotal role in eroding the special status of the state. For them Article 35A is a “fig leaf” and nothing else.

Times are changing fast and new faces are emerging on the political arena of the state. People who have always projected family members of a particular dynasty as the rulers are losing the ground and their credibility is at stake.

Sports activities are important but these cannot change the destiny of the youth. Kashmiri politicians should stop selling dreams to the youth and formulate a comprehensive plan to engage them. During the recent times many young people have joined newly floated political parties and have become the members of different NGOs active in Kashmir. These youth have rejected violence as an option and want to play an active role to transform Kashmir into “Naya Kashmir.”

Since the day BJP has pulled out from the PDP led government in Jammu and Kashmir the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have dropped enough hints to indicate that they could join hands to enter into an alliance with each other to “safeguard” the very concept of the dynasty rule. Today PDP and NC are leaving no chance to prove it to New Delhi that no one can rule J&K except them. But Delhi is not taking them seriously as the Government of India is firm on its stand to hold the panchayat and municipal polls in the state as the people sitting in Delhi have realized that they cannot just keep on depending upon the two families which have been ruling J&K for the past so many decades.

New options are being explored to handover Jammu and Kashmir to the new generation, who could become a part of the prosperous India and contribute towards turning Kashmir into a violence free place.

Young boys who have taken up the arms need to introspect and choose life over death.  Violence and guns are no solution. Mainstream politicians should go beyond playing politics over the issues which have the potential to alienate Kashmiris further. It’s the duty of the mainstream politicians to rise above the party lines and come forward to save the generation next from choosing the path of destruction and devastation.

One hopes that better sense would prevail over the politicians and they would give a chance to new blood to come forward and play their role in turning Kashmir into a better place to live.

No grassroots leaders

The PDP leaders and ministers were repeatedly told by the former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to visit their constituencies and remain in touch with their people but they refused citing security reasons.

Fall of the PDP-BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir has once again brought to fore the uncertainty which prevails in the state. BJP pulling out from the government surprised the Peoples’ Democratic Party but it did not come as a shock for the PDP as its leaders knew that it was coming. May be the timing surprised them.

The BJP after pulling out the plug made it clear that PDP couldn’t do much for the people and its leaders and ministers failed to deliver. The PDP ministers and leaders who used to claim that they are the grassroots leaders forgot their roots soon after coming into power and started reaping the fruits of their hard work which they had done to come into power.

The PDP leaders and ministers were repeatedly told by the former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to visit their constituencies and remain in touch with their people but they refused citing security reasons.

The PDP promised it to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Panchayat elections would be held in the state even after announcing the dates the PDP backtracked and failed to keep up its promise. BJP leaders in New Delhi are of the opinion that the Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh went out of the way to accommodate the concerns of the PDP. The BJP central leadership had expected PDP to reciprocate and carry forward the initiatives of the central government but it did not happen.

The PDP ministers remained busy with politics and rhetoric. They forgot that their mandate is to ensure that developmental activities take place across Jammu and Kashmir and people get benefited. Had they engaged with the people and tried to know what they want situation in Kashmir would not have gone out of hand.

The common perception which prevailed in New Delhi was that if the Kashmiri leaders cannot do anything for their own people what will they do for them. The internal bickering within the PDP also disillusioned the people sitting in New Delhi.

Another factor which went against the PDP was that its leadership remained confined within its family and no effort was made by the party to empower people outside the family.  All the decisions were taken within the family. In fact at present also the top party positions in PDP are also held by the family members.  The BJP has always opposed the Family Raaj and PDP leaders were told on many occasion that BJP is a national party and its allies should take care of the issues which could put the BJP in an embarrassing position.

Till the day BJP shared power with PDP it ensured that controversial issues are put at the back burner to allow the PDP to focus on the governance front. If one sees the record of the PDP during the past three years one can easily say that it achieved nothing on the development front as its ministers couldn’t spare much time for the people who braved all odds and took part in the elections. BJP is a national party despite that it handed over the command to PDP in Jammu and Kashmir just to ensure that people of Kashmir feel the change and become part of the progress and development.

PDP should come out and list it achievements if it has any. When BJP entered into an alliance with PDP it had made it clear that borders cannot be redrawn.  At that point of time PDP had no objection and went ahead with an alliance. When Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away the PDP took nearly two months to decide whether it should carry on with the alliance or not.

More than BJP, PDP has to blame itself for the miseries of the Kashmiri people. The PDP leaders could have acted as a bridge between the Centre and the people of Kashmir but they didn’t make an attempt.   BJP did not even win a single assembly seat in Kashmir and it had nothing at stake in the Valley. BJP’s hard line is known to everyone and there is nothing hidden about it. But PDP is a Kashmir centric party and people expected a lot from it. Had PDP ministers stayed away from discussing politics and focused on the task that was assigned to them Kashmir today would have been a better place to live. PDP needs to introspect rather than blaming BJP for its failures.

Another son of the soil silenced

Shujaat Bukhari would be remembered by one and all as he was a bold journalist who during his 30-year career gave voice to the voiceless people of Kashmir.

Kashmir lost yet another son of soil to the mindless violence that the valley has been witnessing for the past three decades. Assassination of Shujaat Bukhari chief editor of Rising Kashmir on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr has shocked everyone.

Shujaat’s cold blooded murder has evoked widespread condemnation from every section of the society. It has left everyone speechless. Shujaat’s killing is a message to moderate voices that anyone who talks about peace and reconciliation is not welcome. Shujaat as a journalist as a columnist and as an orator always advocated peace and wanted bloodshed to end. Unfortunately a peace lover like him was killed mercilessly.

A few people don’t want peace to prevail as it would harm their interests and would leave them issueless. These actors want Kashmir to burn forever and to keep the pot boiling they keep on adding fuel to the fire. People who believe that violence is the only solution, need to bear in mind that this mindless violence would consume them also. No sane person can justify Shujaat’s killing or for that matter anyone’s killing. The merchants of death are in no mood to listen to anyone. Their only aim seems to be to spill the human blood.

Soon after Shujaat’s killing Mirwaiz Umar Farooq raised a valid query stating that everyone is condemning the brutal murder. If everyone is shocked and moved then who killed Shujaat?

We as Kashmiris need to wake up and have to muster courage to call spade a spade. Otherwise we will keep on losing our brothers. It’s unfortunate that killings have become part of our lives and we have accepted them as our fate and have started believing that our reaction hardly matters. We need to wake up and make it clear to the people who are inimical to peace and reconciliation that we cannot tolerate this torture anymore. A message has to go that no one would be allowed to establish his writ by killing innocents.

Shujaat’s killing has created a vacuum which would be difficult to fill. His assassination is a message to the fourth estate that freedom of press means nothing to the people who have turned into merchants of death. People who think that violence is the only solution they need to be reminded that issues cannot be resolved on streets. History stands testimony to the fact that all the issues across the world have been resolved through negotiations and talks and silencing the voices which care for their own people is no solution.

When Centre announced Ramadan ceasefire in J&K everyone was hopeful that situation would improve and peace would be given a chance. Now it looks like that peace initiative is fast losing its sheen and it may end soon. This is not good news for the people of Kashmir as it would once again lead to more violence which would consume more lives. It’s really sad that graveyards are getting filled and the number of youth is declining fast.

It has been observed that whenever it appears that a breakthrough is in offing something or other happens which leads to status quo. Late Abdul Gani Lone in 2002 had indicated that Hurriyat would talk to New Delhi and he had made it clear to everyone that dialogue is the only way forward, and Kashmiris should be allowed to decide the future course of action but before he could proceed he was silenced forever.  Late Gani Lone’s assassination pushed the peace lovers on the back foot and they just stitched their lips.

Violence has emerged as the biggest enemy of Kashmir. It has to end for things to move forward. Shujaat’s killing is a big set back for the peace process. When Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Kashmir earlier this month he had given enough hints about the Ramadan ceasefire would be extended. But now the truce has been called off and the last hope is over.

Shujaat Bukhari would be remembered by one and all as he was a bold journalist who during his 30-year career gave voice to the voiceless people of Kashmir. A bold voice has been silenced forever. He would always live in our hearts and his contribution towards journalism would always be remembered. Rest In Peace Shujaat.
