Time to shun brokerage politics

True leadership demands self-sufficiency, the courage to stand on one’s own feet

Kashmir is often described as a complex tapestry woven with threads of cultural sensitivities, and geopolitical tensions. This complexity, however, also casts a long shadow over the very purpose of politics i.e., to be the voice of the people. But in this intricate dance, Kashmiri politicians often find themselves adrift, grappling with a stark reality: no one will act as their polling agents.

The reliance on central leadership, the silent acceptance of corruption, and the tendency to project power through mere proximity to national figures – these are all shackles that bind Kashmiri politicians to a self-inflicted paralysis. It is time to break free.

The first, and perhaps the most crucial step, is for Kashmiri politicians to shed the skin of “brokerage politics.” They cannot be mere intermediaries, whispering the woes of their constituents into the ears of distant power centers. True leadership demands self-sufficiency, the courage to stand on one’s own feet and champion the aspirations of the people, not through whispered deals, but through direct engagement.

The success of leaders in Maharashtra offers a stark comparison. They built their power bases not on patronage, but on a deep understanding of the needs and concerns of their people. They became the voice of the voiceless, the champions of local aspirations, and in doing so, earned the trust and loyalty that propelled them to success. This is the path Kashmiri politicians must tread. They cannot simply click pictures with national leaders and expect the electorate to swoon. Neither can they scare their political opponents by being a part of photo sessions. People crave genuine representation, leaders who understand their struggles, who empathize with their hardships, and who are unafraid to fight for their betterment. Since the day Narendra Modi has taken over the Prime Minister of India, he has made it amply clear that a common man is the priority and the regime led by him is committed to work for his welfare.

Leaders in Kashmir need to understand that they have to fall in the line. Their silence in the face of corruption is an insidious foe. It is not enough to simply point fingers and wait for the invisible hand of central leadership to dispense justice. The fight against corruption demands vocal opposition, unwavering determination, and a resolute commitment to hold everyone, regardless of party affiliation, accountable. The people of Kashmir deserve leaders who will be their watchdogs, who will expose the rot within, and who will not hesitate to raise their voices against any form of malfeasance.

This fight cannot be outsourced; it must be waged on the ground, with courage and conviction. Furthermore, the allure of the “London syndrome” – the tendency of corrupt politicians to stash their ill-gotten wealth in foreign lands– must be resisted. Unlike their Pakistani counterparts, who have bled their nation dry, Kashmiri leaders must understand that they are custodians of a vibrant, resilient people. Their wealth, their legacy, lies not in offshore bank accounts, but in the well-being of their communities. India, unlike many other nations, has a long memory.

The ghosts of past betrayals continue to haunt the present, serving as a stark reminder that the people do not forget. Upright citizens, the torchbearers of justice, keep the record of misdeeds alive, ensuring that future generations can judge their leaders with clear eyes. This is where the true test of leadership lies, to be remembered not as brokers of corruption, but as genuine representatives, as champions of the people. They need to muster the courage to confront, head-on, the hydra-headed monster of corruption, nepotism, and extortion. They have to become the voice of the voiceless, the hope of the downtrodden, the embodiment of a brighter future for Kashmir.

The path to political relevance for Kashmiri leaders lies not in the corridors of power in Delhi, but in the hearts and minds of their people. By shedding the crutches of patronage, by raising their voices against corruption, and by championing the aspirations of the people, they can forge a new destiny for themselves and their beloved Kashmir. It is time to shed the skin of mere politicians and become true leaders, etching their names not in the sand of fleeting alliances, but in the granite of genuine representation. The people of Kashmir, and history itself, are waiting.

A transformative journey

No place for corruption, nepotism and appeasement in ‘New India’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘New India’ has transformed Jammu and Kashmir from strife torn region into a vibrant place. The winds of change that have swept J&K after the abrogation of Article 370 have put the Union Territory on the path of peace, prosperity and development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 10th Independence Day speech delivered on August 15 this year made it clear there is no place for corruption, nepotism and appeasement in “New India.”

PM Modi’s assertions struck a chord not only with the nation at large but also with the J&K youth.

The Prime Minister has given a clear roadmap to the J&K Government led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to empower J&K youth and ensure that three ills: corruption, nepotism and appeasement are wiped out from the system completely.

PM Modi’s speech highlighted the transformative journey that India has embarked upon, marked by the dismantling of dynasty rule and the steadfast resolve to combat corruption. His speech found resonance in the hearts and minds of J&K youth, offering them renewed hope for a future defined by democratic values, inclusivity, and empowerment.

For decades, Jammu and Kashmir had been marred by the grip of dynastic politics, which not only perpetuated a sense of entitlement but also choked the voices of the common people. The ruling elite’s hold over the region was marked by a lack of accountability, a scarcity of opportunities, and the erosion of trust in governance.

The power corridors were dominated by a few families, leaving little room for political diversity and citizen participation.
However, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi challenged the status-quo and redefined the very concept of governance in Jammu and Kashmir.

In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi articulated the significance of empowering the youth and dismantling the barriers that hinder their potential.

The decision to break free from dynasty rule and encourage a more inclusive political landscape has resonated deeply with the Kashmiri youth, who are leading from the front to contribute towards the democratic fabric of the nation.

The concept of ‘New India’ heralds a future where leadership is based on merit, capability, and a commitment to the welfare of the people. By embracing a more participatory political environment, where young leaders are encouraged to step forward, the government is not just altering the power dynamics but also fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among the youth.

This transition has sent a powerful message to Kashmiri youth: their opinions matter, their aspirations are valued, and they have the potential to shape the destiny of their homeland.
Corruption, another malignant issue that had plagued J&K has been systematically addressed by the government.

The Prime Minister’s emphasis on the importance of transparency and accountability is a clear message to one and all that the era of impunity is over.
The J&K youth, who have been witness to the corrosive effects of corruption on their society, view this commitment to eradicating corruption as a vital step towards restoring trust in the system.

In his Independence-Day speech, PM Modi also highlighted the critical role of technology in this endeavor.
The implementation of e-governance and digital platforms in J&K has not only streamlined administrative processes but has also reduced the scope for middlemen who often facilitated corrupt practices.

The digitization of services, combined with the government’s resolve to punish wrongdoers, have garnered the trust of the Kashmiri youth who are increasingly engaging with technology and demanding greater transparency in governance.

Another remarkable aspect of the government’s approach has been recognition of the importance of economic development in winning over the hearts and minds of the J&K youth.

The region’s vast potential in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and handicrafts largely remained untapped due to years of Pakistan sponsored terrorism and neglect. However, with the introduction of targeted economic initiatives, the youth are witnessing opportunities for growth and self-reliance.
The ‘Start-up India’ initiative, for instance, has ignited the entrepreneurial spirit among the J&K youth.

The government’s efforts to create conducive environment for business growth, coupled with financial support and mentorship, have empowered young Kashmiris to convert their ideas into tangible ventures. This has not only contributed towards economic growth but has also nurtured a sense of pride and ownership among them.

Moreover, the commitment to infrastructure development in J&K is a testament to the government’s determination to uplift the region.

Establishment of new educational institutions, improved healthcare facilities and better connectivity have not only enhanced the quality of life for J&K youth but are an ample proof of government’s recognition of their right to progress and prosperity.

Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a ‘New India’ encompasses the spirit of unity in diversity. His emphasis on embracing cultural diversity and respecting different languages and traditions has echoed deeply in J&K, a region renowned for its rich cultural heritage.

By acknowledging the unique identity of J&K within the broader Indian mosaic, the government has fostered a sense of belonging among the youth, who are proud to contribute to a diverse and inclusive nation.

4G suspension saved human lives

The government took its time to lift the ban over 4G services and allowed things to settle down

High speed internet services have returned to Jammu and Kashmir nearly after one and half year. Restoration of 4G services has elated the people. But some critics are propagating that the government has done no favour by restoring these services.

The internet was suspended in J&K on August 5, 2019 when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two union territories.

The critics, who are claiming that 4G should have been restored long back, seem to have forgotten a vital fact that the internet suspension in J&K didn’t allow Pakistan to trigger frenzy. Had the Centre not suspended the high speed internet services, people sitting across the Line of Control would have made every possible attempt to burn Kashmir through social media. The internet blockade didn’t allow them to succeed in their designs.

After the abrogation of Article 370, Kashmir remained calm as the instigators were kept at bay. The investigations and developments have revealed that elements inimical to peace used internet as a tool to lure youth towards militancy and radicalization.

The government took its time to lift the ban over 4G services and allowed things to settle down after the abrogation of the Article 370. Had it succumbed under pressure, more youth would have got radicalized and could have possibly become militants.

Now, the 4G is back and people are happy, but they should bear it in mind that internet needs to be used for constructive purpose rather than using it for a propaganda against their own country.

The BJP led Central Government has proven it beyond doubt that it cares for the people of J&K and believes that their lives are precious than anything else. When the Article 370 was scrapped many people were of the opinion that Kashmir will erupt and mass killings could take place, but the people remained calm and didn’t react. The main reason for people not reacting was that the situation was handled carefully and no room was given to the miscreants who could have exploited a common man.

After August 5, 2019, our neighbouring country left no stone unturned to foment trouble in Kashmir. But in absence of internet it couldn’t do much as the ones who could have executed their instructions were incommunicado.

The absence of 4G services in Kashmir hit every sector and people have realized the importance of internet. Now, it’s for them to ensure that this facility is not misused.  It’s the responsibility of the parents to keep a vigil on the activities of their children and ensure that they don’t fall prey to the propaganda that our adversaries have launched against the country.

To build “Naya Jammu and Kashmir” is our responsibility. Time has changed and we cannot keep on running after the illusions. The dream merchants who sold dreams during the past three decades stand exposed as on date. All their promises have turned out to be a hoax.  Ones who used to propagate the cause of our neighboring country have turned mute as they are aware of the fact that time to sell slogans is over and they cannot run their shops by pushing youth towards violence.

People in Kashmir have witnessed enough of bloodshed and mayhem they want to live a peaceful life and want to prosper. They have become politically mature and cannot be misled anymore.

Suspension of 4G services for more than 500 days in J&K led to economic losses but it saved lives and provided people with an opportunity to think what’s good and bad for them.

Peace is a prerequisite for development and the economic growth. If there is no peace nothing will move. Ones who are once again trying to create confusion are not doing any good to people. No conflict can prevail forever. Change is mandatory. After August 5, 2019 many things have changed in Kashmir and the biggest visible change is the desire for peace. Young faces who have replaced the traditional politicians during the past one and a half year are keen to serve their people and pull Kashmir out of the quagmire of uncertainty. They are out to change the destiny of the people of this battered land, which was used as a battlefield by Pakistan to settle scores with India. But now the people of Kashmir have realized that they cannot suffer forever and they need to be left alone.
